Here’s a short story of a guy in Beaumont that decided to shop for a Austin agent based purely on price. He took out a policy for a very low price with an agency in 78660. Amazingly, the agent was offering the lowest prices for his 1999 Nissan Sentra anywhere! Thinking he was getting an great deal, he signed the contract immediately.
To make a long story short, the guy’s wife was driving down Sixth Street one day and got into a horrible wreck. When it came time to do his claim, the guy was given a major run-around, and when he finally got an agent on the phone, he was gives one line of B.S. after another. Finally the agent told him that his car was not covered because the policy contract he signed with them stated that his 1999 Nissan Sentra was only covered for an accident if he was driving (not his wife).
Furious, the individual called the Texas Dept. of Insurance for help. Sadly though, the State regulators (for TX) could not help him. The reason? The insurance contract he had with this ‘cheap’ company was indeed legal: And since he signed the Austin contract without reading the fine-print he was bound to the contract, no matter how unscrupulous it was.
Yikes Man!! So let this be a lesson: Going with a cheap auto insurer could mean that you are getting a ‘cheap’ policy contract as well, and you might end up losing cash in the long-run. So do your homework Austinite, and always practice smart-shopping techniques, thereby avoiding unscrupulous insurer agencies.
