Here’s a short story of a guy in Lenox that decided to shop for a Boston agent based purely on price. He took out a policy for a very low price with an agency in 02222. Compellingly enough, the agent was offering the lowest prices for his 2002 Mercedes GL-Class anywhere! Thinking he was getting an outstanding deal, he signed the contract immediately.
To make a long story short, the guy’s wife was driving down Boylston St. one day and got into a horrible wreck. When it came time to do his claim, the guy was given a major run-around, and when he finally got an agent on the phone, he was gives one line of hogwash after another. Finally the agent told him that his car was not covered because the policy contract he signed with them stated that his 2002 Mercedes GL-Class was only covered for an accident if he was driving (not his wife).
Furious, the individual called the Massachusetts Dept. of Insurance for help. Sadly though, the State regulators (for MA) could not help him. The reason? The insurance contract he had with this ‘cheap’ company was indeed legal: And since he signed the Boston contract without reading the fine-print he was bound to the contract, no matter how unethical it was.
What the!…..! So let this be a lesson: Going with a cheap auto insurer could mean that you are getting a ‘cheap’ policy contract as well, and you might end up losing dough in the long-run. So do your homework Bostonian, and always practice smart-shopping techniques, thereby avoiding unethical insurer agencies.
