Here’s a short story of a guy in Lakeview that decided to shop for a Chicago agent based purely on price. He took out a policy for a very low price with an agency in 60619. Intriguingly enough, the agent was offering the lowest prices for his 2005 GMC Canyon anywhere! Thinking he was getting an super deal, he signed the contract immediately.
To make a long story short, the guy’s wife was driving down South Michigan Avenue one day and got into a horrible wreck. When it came time to do his claim, the guy was given a major run-around, and when he finally got an agent on the phone, he was gives one line of rubbish after another. Finally the agent told him that his car was not covered because the policy contract he signed with them stated that his 2005 GMC Canyon was only covered for an accident if he was driving (not his wife).
Furious, the individual called the Illinois Dept. of Insurance for help. Sadly though, the State regulators (for IL) could not help him. The reason? The insurance contract he had with this ‘cheap’ company was indeed legal: And since he signed the Chicago contract without reading the fine-print he was bound to the contract, no matter how dishonest it was.
No Way!! So let this be a lesson: Going with a cheap auto insurer could mean that you are getting a ‘cheap’ policy contract as well, and you might end up losing bucks in the long-run. So do your homework Chicagoan, and always practice smart-shopping techniques, thereby avoiding dishonest insurer agencies.
